Lahti, Finland – 23 March 2026

Supersight Oy has delivered a workspace occupancy measurement and reporting system to the City of Lahti for its City Hall. The solution enables the city to obtain accurate, reliable, and continuous data on the actual use of its office spaces.

The project was initiated in response to the need to better understand how the newly renovated spaces are being used following the building’s major refurbishment. According to the City of Lahti, traditional estimates are no longer sufficient for decision-making, and objective, technology-based measurement is required.

“Following the renovation of City Hall, the actual utilisation rate of workspace areas has been widely discussed, and there has been a clear need to measure it reliably. Sensor-based technological solutions provide accurate information on how spaces are used during the working day,” the city stated in its decision.

Real-time insights into space utilisation

Supersight’s solution is based on smart sensors installed in the premises, which measure anonymised people counts in real time. The system provides continuous reporting on space utilisation without identifying individuals or storing image data.

Measurements began in February 2026 following installation. A sufficiently long measurement period ensures reliable insights into how spaces are used across different times and conditions, supporting the city’s space planning and resource optimisation.

A technically and architecturally unique project

The project has been both technically demanding and highly rewarding. Lahti City Hall is a protected building designed by architect Eliel Saarinen and underwent a €22 million renovation to modernise building systems and adapt spaces to current functional requirements.

The historical and architectural characteristics of the building set high requirements for installation. The solution needed to integrate seamlessly into the environment while preserving the building’s architectural integrity.

Enabling data-driven space management

The collected data enables the City of Lahti to:

    • optimise workspace utilisation
    • identify under- and over-utilised areas
    • support hybrid work development
    • improve space efficiency and cost management

Supersight’s solution supports the public sector’s transition towards data-driven and responsible space management.
